Printer Setup
| It would seem that users of the "KDE" desktop are not expected to use a printer, but that is OK because everything we need is in the "xtra" folder. Unfortunately, I couldn't depend on KPackage to find all of the files and had to get a couple myself. Lets start by typing "foomatic" in the search text box. Here is the list of files required: | |

then type "cupsys' and select these also.

Next type "guten".

Then "ijs".

Now type "libcups".

Finally type in "python".

Now click "Install marked" and install what you could find. I would always have to go and get "python-foomatic", don't know why. KPackage will tell you what is missing and you won't get a zero, but that is to be expected. Click "Done" to close the install window, for now. |

Now let's go get any files we missed. You can do the "File", "Open" in the top left corner, or just click the blue folder underneath. That opens a file search window. Click the drop down menu arrow and select the "Root Folder /". |

Find the "xtra" folder at the bottom and click on it. Find the file that KPackage missed, like "python-foomatic", and select it. KPackage will then install it for you. |

After you have installed all the files listed, there are still two left. Type "gs-esp" and install it. For some reason KPackage installs it by itself, so adding it earlier doesn't help. |

The last file to install is "printconfig". If KPackage can't find it, go to the "xtra" folder and select it there. |

Yep, still not right. For some reason this time KPackage didn't grab these last two files and set them up after gs-esp and printconf were installed. |
 |
So, on my computer two "cupsys" files needed to be installed a second time to allow them to be correctly configured. |

Now all of the printer 'dependencies' should be satisfied and you should have sufficient printer drivers for the most popular printer models. |

If you know the brand and model of your printer, we can set it up now. Go to the main menu and scroll up to the "Settings" menu above the "Action" bar, then over and down to "Printers." |

In the middle of the bottom of the "Printers" window is the "Administrators Mode..." selection bar. Click this and type in the root password when requested. |

Now just above and to the right is "Print system currently used". Make sure "Cups" is selected. Near the top right is the "Add" menu. |

Click "Next" |

then select the type of printer connection you want to use. For me, it was "Local printer". Click "Next" |
 |
and select how the printer is connected to your computer. Before "USB" cables, the standard printer cable was "Parallel". Click "Next" again and take a short break while the computer digests all the data it has on printers. |

After awhile, you will have a 'select printer driver' window similar to "Windoz". Select the brand name and model number of your printer. Then click "Next" |

and choose one of the drivers (if there is more than one). |

This window allows you to view the printer driver settings and test the driver with your printer. You can go back and choose a different driver to test if you wish. |

Once you have settled on the best printer driver, finish the printer wizard. |

You will be asked to give your print selection a name, any name will do. |

Kwrite is a basic word processor or text editor. Open the main menu, scroll up to "Utilities", then over and down to "Editors". If you have the disk space, you can have KPackage install the "Open Office" suite and use its word processor "Writer". |
